La pintoresca Little Havana
Little Havana es La Pequeña Habana. Is the best-known neighborhood for Cuban exiles in the world. Today, "Little Havana" refers to the sprawling neighborhood lying immediately west of Downtown Miami, stretching west from the Miami River for several miles.
It is characterized by its street life, restaurants, music, and other cultural activities, political passion, and great warmth amongst its residents. Spanish is the language primarily spoken within this community.
Many commercial businesses try to give visitors and neighbors a little bit of Cuban flair to remind those of the neighboring island. You can enjoy typical plates like the famous Cuban Sandwich, the Old Clothes, yucca with mojo, congri and roasted pork, Moors and Christians, and the indispensable coffee with a little bit of milk. Cuban handicrafts and the traditional Havana cigars made by hand can be found walking along the streets. A fun-filled activity in Little Havana is the so-called Viernes Cultural/Cultural Friday, this activity carried out the last Friday of every month throughout many bars and restaurants in the neighborhood.
One of the most emblematic places of Little Havana is Domino Park. A half-open space in which many seniors meet together daily to play dominos, chess, or cards.
One of the most famous social events of the area is the Calle 8 Carnival of Miami Festival, an annual event that celebrates Latin culture and brings together at least one million people every year. Another annual event carried out here is the Gay 8 Festival. A meeting that brings together the LGBTQ community near February. Both activities are displayed in the famous Calle 8.
In 2015, Little Havana was included in the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s annual list of 11 Most Endangered Places. In 2017, the Trust declared it a national treasure!
